Before Weekly Shonen Jump became the home of Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece, its very first issues laid the foundation of that legacy. In Issue #1, Go Nagai’s Harenchi Gakuen appeared as a one-shot that pushed the boundaries of what was considered appropriate for manga and stirred controversy. Later serialized in Issue #11, it became Nagai’s first major success. Issue #1 also introduced Chichi no Tamashii, one of Shueisha’s earliest long-running series, while both early volumes drew readers in with American classics like Flash Gordon and Mandrake the Magician.
