Players Up in Arms with Dominaria United Jumpstart Contents

Dominaria United hits virtual platforms tomorrow. Just one day before we can finally experiment with the set, Dominaria United Jumpstart content was revealed to the public. This set is very different from the past Jumpstart product, and some players are not happy about it. This could ultimately caused by what may be some miscommunication on the player base’s part since this Jumpstart set is not at all like the original one. From exclusive Rares to only a few variations in pack themes, here’s what’s happening with Dominaria United’s Jumpstart product.

Dominaria United Jumpstart Contents

Dominaria United Jumpstart Boxes contain 18 packs. In each of those packs, players can expect to obtain one of the Dominaria United Jumpstart exclusive Rares and one random Rare from the Dominaria United set matching the color of the pack’s theme. The five-colored Dominaria Jumpstart exclusive Rares are pictured above. These will be available in packs that share the color identity of the Rare. Briar Hydra, for example, will be available in green packs, while Ragefire Hellkite will be available in red ones.

There are ten different themes between packs available for Jumpstart Dominaria United packs. Since there are five various exclusive Rares available, it makes sense to state that each Rare shows up in two different themes, both sharing the colors of the rare. Here is a list of the themes and contents to be expected in each:

Commander Legends Concerns

One common complaint from Baldur’s Gate, cited in MTG creator Mark Rosewater’s learning for his 2022 design article, was that the ‘Commander Legends’ name was misused for the Battle for Baldur’s Gate product:

“The most common complaint I got was that players were expecting the set to be something that it didn’t turn out to be. Many believed the label Commander Legends implied that it would have a lot of highly desired reprints for Commander. The lack of Commander reprints combined with Double Masters 2022 coming on its heels (with many of the reprints players hoped to see in Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate) irritated players.”

Players are worried about a similarity between that and this Jumpstart product. While these examples are directed at the Brothers’ War Jumpstart Box previewed recently, these complaints, as stated by the various Redditors being featured, also expand to the Dominaria United Jumpstart set. The most common complaint is best summarized by quoting Dogsy’s comment:

“Wotc at it again. Stealing the name of a successful product and then completely nerfing it and hoping people who liked the original don’t notice and pick up some of the shiny new one that’s nowhere near as good as the original.”

Replacements for Theme Booster Packs

That said, there may be some miscommunication regarding this product’s goal. As outlined in another Reddit post commenting directly on Dominaria United Jumpstart contents, the Jumpstart alternatives for upcoming core sets can be seen as a replacement to what was Theme Booster products. These products, in function, are almost precisely what Dominaria United Jumpstart packs promise to be while also introducing a new format you can use to introduce new players. When viewed in this light, Dominaria United Jumpstart is superior in every way to what Theme Booster packs were.

Cheap, and Great to Introduce New Players With

Regardless of the player base’s complaints, Jumpstart remains a fantastic set you can use to introduce new players to the game. Dominaria United Jumpstart is very cheap, allowing players to pick up some Dominaria United cards for a more affordable price.

Players should note that half of the 36 Rares guaranteed in Dominaria United Jumpstart boxes will be copies of the Jumpstart exclusive Rares. This is both a good and a bad thing. Unfortunately, while there will be a lot of repetition within a box of Jumpstart, these Rares should not be exceptionally expensive and easy to access. Some Redditors, like DumatRising, worry that these will instead “all be headed to the bulk bin.” Either way, as long as customers know what they are purchasing in Dominaria United Jumpstart before they do, there shouldn’t be much of an issue.
