Much Abrew: Invasion of Segovia = Playing Legacy in Standard?

March of the Machine is almost here. While the set doesn’t actually drop until Tuesday, I got a chance to check it out a bit early on Thursday thanks to the Magic Arena early-access day (thanks to Wizards for the invite!), and my biggest takeaway is that Invasion of Segovia is an absurd Magic card. So absurd, in fact, that I couldn’t wait until the normal day to show off the card’s power, so we’re getting a special bonus video this week!

While I think the easiest way to evaluate a battle is by its front side since that’s the half of the card you know you’ll have access to every game,  Invasion of Segovia is an exception to this rule because the card’s real power is its backside, Caetus, Sea Tyrant of Segovia. While it’s just a 3/3, giving all of our noncreature spells convoke does some crazy things. On the turn it flips, we should be able to dump most of our hand of token producers, like Invasion of New Phyrexia, Wedding Announcement, and more copies of Invasion of Segovia. Then, since Caetus untaps four of our creatures on our end step, we’ll also be able to leave up countermagic like Make Disappear and Protect the Negotiators or removal like Fateful Absence and The Wandering Emperor, even if we are completely tapped out. Basically, we’re playing a solid Standard deck, and then once Invasion of Segovia flips, we get to start playing a Legacy deck that’s full of free counterspells and removal while our opponent is stuck playing Standard. It becomes super hard to lose.

Overall, we went undefeated with the deck, although you should take the wins with a grain of salt since this was early-access day. Still, out of all the decks I played during early access, this is the one that I think is most likely to end up being a true top-tier Standard deck. We get to play a bunch of the best white cards in Standard, like Ambitious Farmhand, Spirited Companion, and Wedding Announcement, all of which synergize with our plan. Then, we eventually get to start playing Legacy once Invasion of Segovia flips, which is downright unfair.

Anyway, that’s all for today. How legit do you think Invasion of Segovia will be in Standard? Let me know in the comments! As always, leave your thoughts, ideas, opinions, and suggestions, and you can reach me on Twitter @SaffronOlive or at
