There’s a new influencer in the sports card world. Rich Uncle Moneybags, aka Mr. Monopoly, is making his foray into the world of basketball cards. Hasbro and Panini are partnering to create Monopoly Prizm: NBA Edition. It’s a new spin on the iconic board game that has multiple layers to it.
Monopoly Prizm: NBA Edition Overview
Monopoly Prizm: NBA Edition can be approached a couple of ways. First, there’s the collecting side. Like other trading card games, some may simply opt to open packs, work on the set, chase some elements or go after their favorite players.
The set features 90 total cards. Besides the main game, there are booster packs and boxes that also have inserts and parallels like Monopoly Boardwalk.
Playing the Game
There’s a practical side to Monopoly Prizm as well. It is a game, after all. In the original Monopoly, the goal is to buy up properties, build houses and lure your sibling into rage quitting after they land on your hotels in back-to-back turns.
Here, there are no properties. Instead it starts with players building their decks. Packs and trading are encouraged. As the game evolves, players get additional cards and ultimately win by getting them most points — just like a real basketball game.
“Based on fan insights, we noticed a unique crossover opportunity between individuals who love classic gameplay and card collecting, which ultimately lit the spark to create and bring this innovative trading card element to Monopoly,” said Adam Biehl, Hasbro Gaming’s Senior Vice President and General Manager.
“After nearly two years of development and collaboration, we are excited to bring the Monopoly Prizm: NBA game to market,” added Jason Howarth, Panini America’s Vice President of Marketing.
Target will be the first place to find Monopoly Prizm: NBA when it goes on sale in mid-April. Other stores will follow a few months later, beginning in August.
