Welcome to this week’s Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports.
The baseball season is over and the Houston Astros are World Series Champions. For the moment, no player has seen a bigger bump and rise in interest than Jeremy Peña. The rookie shortstop entered the season with little fanfare, replacing Carlos Correa. Peña went on to have a strong regular season and a monster postseason, winning both ALCS and World Series MVP honors. Understandably, interest in his cards has risen significantly in recent weeks. With so many delays, there are still lots of 2022 products slated to come out, which should give collectors more options.
As far as products go, 2022 Topps Update Baseball continues to show legs. This is typical of flagship products. This past week was quiet as far as quantity goes of new releases. However, there were two big ones to keep an eye on. 2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey kicks off another year of Young Guns. 2022 Panini Prizm World Cup puts the chromium brand on the international stage. It’s not quite as unique a situation as its debut in 2014 given how the soccer market has evolved but it still should be a big one. Don’t be surprised to see one or both of these around these parts shortly.
In football, Justin Fields had a standout game last weekend, rushing for 178 yards. Not bad for a quarterback. The Bears are struggling to win but Fields is showing glimpses of being one of the game’s most exciting quarterbacks.
